About Me

I'm Qiong! (How do you say your name? Here it is → /chiong/). I am a Registered Dietitian based in Sacramento, CA. I grew up in China and studied Food Science and Engineering in college. I also have a master's degree and a Ph.D. degree in nutrition.

I love to try foods from different countries. Living in the US for over 10 years, I've had the opportunity to meet friends from all over the world. Dinner parties and potlucks with domestic and international students were some of the most memorable moments when I was in grad school. We learned about each other and the culture through the sharing of our food.

I also love to introduce Chinese food and culture to my friends. I've hosted numerous hot pot and dumpling dinner parties. Throughout the years, I've received many requests for my recipes. However, like my parents and most other Chinese, I don't really follow recipes. I eyeball the ingredients and improvise a lot.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, I have been staying at home and experimenting with different recipes. Finally, I decided to create this site to document my recipes and share them with you.

Although I enjoy delicious food and do not restrict myself from eating anything, I always remind myself what a balanced and healthy diet should look like (e.g. Mediterranean Diet, DASH Diet, MyPlate, etc.) I try to find a balance between flavor and nutrition. Here are the things I think about when I'm cooking:

  1. What produce is in season? Any new recipes I want to try featuring these produce?

  2. Does this dish/meal have enough vegetables and/or whole grains? Can I add more?

  3. Does it have too much sodium, saturated fat, or added sugar? Can I cut it down and still make it tasty?

  4. Can I minimize the number of cookware I use? Can I simplify the cooking process and reduce active cooking time?

I get my recipe inspirations from local farmers' markets, family and friends, restaurants, food bloggers, and YouTubers. All recipes on this site are tested by me, and the flavors are adjusted to my liking. I may also update the recipes every now and then. Feel free to try my recipes (at your own risk)! Thanks for visiting and bon appetit!
